Paying personal tax to HMRC
The easiest way to pay your personal tax is through your online gateway.
The deadline for paying your self assessment is ordinarily 31 January, but if you are required to make payments on account you may need to make a payment by 31 July as well. For the 2023-24 tax year taxpayers required to make payments on account will make a payment in January 2024 and July 2024. They will submit their tax return by 31 January 2025 and must pay a balancing payment or obtain a refund if they have overpaid. They may also need to pay the first payment on account toward 2024-25.
Use the correct payment reference number
Your payment reference number is your UTR number (not your company one!) You must use this, or your payment will not be applied to your account. The following link has various options on how you can pay and will also help you with the payment reference number. If you have paid this successfully last year it will remain the same as this year.
You should NOT use your business bank account to pay self-assessment as it is a personal tax. It may take up to three bank working days for payment to reach HMRC.
